Name: Don Shaffer Presents History of the Alliance Fire Department
Date: November 14, 2018
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:15 PM EST
Event Description:
Alliance Historical Society will hold its annual membership meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7:00 p.m., in Rodman Main Auditorium. Don Shaffer will be speaking for the evening about the history of the Alliance Fire Department. An Alliance native, Shaffer got his first fire fighter experience while in the army when he volunteered to serve on the boiler squad. In 1973 a friend encouraged him to take the fire fighter exam and he became a member of the Alliance Fire Department. He served for 27 years and retired in 2000. He vividly remembers the Universal Cooperative fire in 1974 while he was on duty. Shaffer is the "unofficial" Alliance Fire Department historian and has an extensive photographic collection of Alliance fire apparatus, fire fighters, fire houses, and fires. He has owned and restored three fire trucks over the years, including a 1948 Seagrave Quad Firetruck, which was his first. A brief business meeting will be held prior to his presentation. You do not have to be a member to attend the program. It is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Main Library at 330-821-2665.
