Name: Alliance Historical Society Launches Levi L. Lamborn Book at RPL
Date: March 14, 2018
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM EDT
Event Description:
Alliance Historical Society will launch the publication of its latest book, History of Lexington Township, by Levi L. Lamborn, on Wednesday, Mar. 14, from 7 to 8 p.m., in Rodman Main Auditorium with Michelle Dillon, Robb Hyde, and Karen Perone as the evening’s presenters. As most residents of Alliance know, Levi L. Lamborn may be best known for cultivating the Scarlet Carnation, but did you know that he wrote the first history of our community in the mid-1800s? It would be as hard to overestimate the impact of Lamborn on Alliance as it would to overstate his interests and varied careers. Physician, horticulturalist, politician, banker, and real estate developer only cover the highlights of his long life. As a contributor to the Alliance Weekly Local (precursor to today’s Alliance Review), he wrote a series of 34 articles for the newspaper to record our history from the earliest settlers through 1873. It also served as a promotional item to help sell more papers. These articles recounted the labors, events, and people who shaped the first seven decades of our community and was titled “History of Lexington Township.” All articles, many based on the accounts of participants and their children, are collected in this book. Robb Hyde transcribed the series of articles from microfilm and Karen Perone edited the articles into a format that allows for easy reading. With additional assistance from Michelle Dillon, the book is now available through smile.amazon.com/ch/34-6530762, Rodman Public Library, and the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce. Copies of the book will be available at the time of the program for a $15.00 donation. This is a free event and open to the public. No registration is needed.
