Richard Haldi presents The Meyers Lake Story: a Mansion in the Wilderness, on Monday, October 3, at 7:00 p.m., in Rodman Main Auditorium. Haldi, who resides at Meyers Lake and runs a guesthouse next to his home, brings a fascinating story to the audience about a wealthy foundry owner from Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Andrew Meyer had an unusual dream after the War of 1812. He wanted to build a mansion in the wilderness of Ohio. A portion of his future 3,000-acre Canton, Ohio, estate and its natural spring-fed lake would eventually become one of northern Ohio's leading summer resorts, boasting two popular 19th century hotels and a grand casino. It was then in the 1970’s that Meyers Lake Park was to be transformed into a grand Bicentennial Park—a concept that, unfortunately, never turned into a reality.
Mr. Haldi is a native of Canton, Ohio, who retired from Diebold while working for their International Division in Paris, France. He is on the board of the Canton Preservation Society; has written a book on Stark County’s industrialist, Cornelius Aultman; has produced a souvenir book on the history of Canton’s Palace Theatre, and is currently writing a book on William McKinley’s 1896 famous house: Front Porch Campaign House.
