Time: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM EDT
Event Description:
Join us for a fun afternoon of traditional Celtic dance music at Rodman Public Library as One String Short acoustic band entertains with a mix of Bach, English country dance tunes, Irish jigs and reels, and old time claw hammer banjo. The performance runs from 2 to 4 p.m., on Saturday, July 14, in Rodman Main Auditorium, and is suitable for all ages. The band, One String Short, was started in 1989 by Dennis Kempthorne. Through the years the band has had many talented musicians and now includes Dennis Kempthorne, Frank Krygowski, Beth Gray, Sandy Baker, Ken Baker, and Debbie Martin. Dennis, a multi-instrumentalist, has been playing for contra dances for 25 years, as well as directing several church choirs in the Alliance area. He began playing guitar and upright string bass at age 35, followed by fiddle and banjo. Frank, a retired Youngstown State University professor, plays fiddle, penny whistle, recorders, guitar and mandolin. Beth, a singer and acoustic guitarist, taught music for 34 years. She performs as a folk singer in many venues and has directed a church choir for many years. Sandy, retired from Kent State University, has used her talent playing organ and piano in churches for 40 years, and Ken, who is a guitarist, bassist and singer, has played in several blues and rock bands for 40 years–currently as a jazz musician, he is part of the Modern Roots Band. Debbie, a cellist, has played with symphony orchestras and recently has been smitten with Irish music. She is looking forward to retiring soon and devoting more time to playing her music.
