Name: Rewired. An Unlikely Doctor, A Brave Amputee, at Rodman Library
Date: March 18, 2019
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM EDT
Event Description:
“An unlikely doctor, a brave amputee, and the medical miracle that made history.” Dr. Ajay K. Seth, an orthopaedic surgeon, and Melissa Loomis will share their incredible medical journey with a presentation at Rodman Public Library on Monday, Mar. 18, at 7 p.m., in the library’s auditorium, followed by a book signing of “Rewired.” In 2015 Melissa Loomis, a resident of North Canton, Ohio, was bitten by a raccoon. At the time it seemed like a minor injury, however, it turned into a life-or-death medical crisis. She suffered from a severe infection that antibiotics did not clear. It ultimately resulted in the amputation of her arm. In his book, “Rewired,” Dr. Seth states, “What makes Melissa Loomis different is her unique combination of thoughtfulness, kindness, eerie calm and (especially) courage. She has never given in to self-pity or held a sense of entitlement, even to something as basic and human as having two functional arms.” Dr. Seth performed a groundbreaking 16 hour surgery to restructure the nerves in her amputated arm that now allows Loomis to actually “feel” a prosthetic hand and move her prosthetic elbow, hand and fingers simply by thinking – just as she does with her natural arm. Dr. Seth is a board-certified orthopaedic hand and upper extremity surgeon in North Canton, Ohio, and the CEO of Bionic Miracle, LLC. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed his orthopaedic residency program at Ohio State University. He was awarded his research fellowship in orthopaedic surgery and biomaterials at Ohio State University. Dr. Seth is member of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is working on advancements in prosthetics with Johns Hopkins University and through his company Bionic Miracle, LLC. As time permits, following the presentation a question & answer period will be offered. Books will be available for purchase at the time of the program which the author will then sign.
