The 2016 Fogle Author Series continues with author Dr. John R. Walker who will speak at Rodman Public Library on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2:00 p.m., in the Main Auditorium. “U.S. Army veteran, John R. Walker, grew up in Alliance, Ohio, and graduated from Alliance High School. After serving three years in the army, including one tour of duty in Vietnam, he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Akron, then later his master’s degree in history from the University of Akron, and completed his education with a Ph.D. in history from Kent State University. It was his doctoral dissertation that he eventually turned into his book.
Bracketing the Enemy: Forward Observers in World War II is based on his dissertation, and is a tribute to his father who served as a forward observer during World War II. Forward observers (FO) were artillerymen who directed artillery fire from the front lines. Walker’s book details the history and dangers present in the FO line of duty and shows how important it was to the success of military ground operations. He and his wife reside in Stow, Ohio.”
